About the Show
7:30 pm
A wonderfully entertaining band with an enthralling singer, 2nd Avenue Klezmer features an all-star cast of musicians. The popular quintet features the theatrical Yiddish vocals of favorite Deborah Davis, along with virtuoso clarinetist Robert Zelickman, guitarist Jiri Svoboda, drummer Bob Weller and contrabass legend Bertram Turetzky.
With riveting personal anecdotes, history and live music, “A Wandering Feast” tells world-renowned artist Yale Strom's year long journey of self and musical discovery behind the Iron Curtain in 1981. Strom turned down law school and bought a one-way ticket to the East Bloc to find old klezmer music, first in cellars and archives. That search took him to Holocaust survivors, both Jewish and Roma, who remembered klezmer melodies that had never been published or recorded. No other American revivalist had tapped this rich resource of music, culture and life throughout the East Bloc. Strom began to understand the people who created the culture. He not only found music, he found the soundtrack of his own Yiddish heritage.
